"WHEN THE DAVIS FAMILY CAME TO GEORGIA"

John Davis – 1789 - 1857 and wife Sarah (Sally Blue) moved to Bluffton, Georgia from North Carolina in 1833 in a covered wagon with 8 children. John and Sarah prospered and became prominent citizens in the community. They are buried in the Bluffton Cemetery on land donated by John. A stone fence surrounds their graves cut from his quarry.

Their son John (Sheep John) Davis – 1819 - 1892 (he furnished mutton, wool and beef to the Confederate Army - shipped by railroad). He married Chloe Roberts – 1831 - 1894. Her parents were Drewry Roberts and Chloe Golightly Roberts. They settled in Miller County, eight miles west of Colquitt now known as Davistown or Griggs Community. Of this union there were 12 children.

One of their sons Drury B. (Drew) Davis – 9/5 1868 -10/13 1931. He married Minnie Alice Houston – 1/7 1876 - 11/4 1954. She was the daughter of William M. Houston and Virginia (Jenny) Roberts of Miller County. Drew and Minnie reared 10 children: Daniel Belcher Davis – wife Louvenia Wilson – 2 children; Billy Bruton Davis – Jessie Grimsley – 2; Carl Franklin Davis – Ada Mae Williams – 3; Clarence E. (Scrap) Davis – Cara Sheffield – 2; Zemma Leona Davis – Wright Tiner – 6; *Samuel Edwin (Samp) Davis – Decima Jo Williams – 1; Beatrice Davis – Curtis Williams – 4; Arrie Gladys Davis – Doster Johnson – 2; Hazel Fay Davis – Woodrow Bush – 2; Callie Lena Davis – Edgar Drew Sheffield – 1.

All of their children settled on the Davis land in the Griggs Community except 2 daughters moved to Florida (Beatrice and Lena).

The houses were built near like a village. At that time Griggs Elementary School, Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church (erected 1847) and 2 stores were the center of the community.

We grandchildren had a happy, safe childhood with many loving family members. We are now trying to pass on to the next generation the pride we have for this large wonderful Davis family.
