TY TY BAPTIST CHURCH

The Ty Ty Baptist Church had its beginning in a school house after the Rev. G. Tom West came to Ty Ty in 1890 and aroused interest in organizing a Baptist Church.

In 1894, Mrs. Rohema Mitchell gave an acre of land on which the church was built. The Rev. West and 12 Baptist men organized the Ty Ty Baptist Church. Plans were made to build a frame church building. All building materials and labor were donated. This was truly a labor of love. The Ty Ty Baptist Church was organized with twelve charter members and continued to grow. Soon it went from quarter-time to a half-time church with the organization of a women’s missionary society and a Training Union.

A pastorium was erected in 1949 on property adjacent to the church. In 1950, the church went from a half-time to full-time, with the pastor living on the field. All programs were included, Sunday School, Training Union, Women's Missionary Society, and a Brotherhood (Men’s Missions). With contentious growth, by 1953, a new red brick two-story educational building was erected. A new sanctuary was built shortly after in 1961. In February of 1971, a new pastorium was built north of the church. After a 3,800 square foot social hall was erected in 1977, an additional two acres was purchased in 1983 to accommodate for parking and to enlarge the cemetery.

In 1991, the sanctuary was renovated and a new nursery and Sunday School space was added to the church. In February of 2002, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for a multi-purpose building that will include a kitchen, gymnasium, classrooms and offices at the estimated cost of $500,000. The newest addition to the church will be used for “growing together, sharing meals and conversation together, singing together and doing missions together.”
